Our old wood deck had a typical railing that showed significant weathering and obscured our lake view. The deck surface was worn and deteriorated, and our home-built underdeck system had failed, no longer keeping water off the stone terrace below. Lower sections of the support posts were showing wood rot.
We asked Dennis for ideas on how to salvage what we had and open up our view—yes, we jokingly asked him to “put lipstick on a pig”! Instead, he introduced a completely new approach, starting with all-steel framing. Wooden posts were replaced with steel, and perfectly straight steel joists created a level surface to support the new composite decking.
A new railing system fully opened our view, while the underdeck system keeps our stone terrace dry and usable in all weather. Thanks to the strength of steel, we were also able to extend the deck’s depth from 12’ to 14’ without relocating the support posts, providing extra space and flexibility for furniture with minimal additional investment.
It was a fantastic project that added maintenance-free enjoyment and long-term value to our home.
